In “The Orphanage” (2017), Serhiy Zhadan explores the multifaceted nature of belonging by depicting his protagonist’s experience of reconnecting with his Ukrainian identity in the wake of the war in Donbas. The novel describes how the entanglement of war, trauma, and nostalgia shape the individuals’ transformation in their quest for Ukrainian identity.
