The Intensive Russian Programme of Dalhousie University

The Russian Program Abroad (the oldest and the first one of its kind in Canada) is a special inter-disciplinary program of instruction, which allows students to undertake intensive study of the Russian language, both here in Canada and in Russia at St. Petersburg University for a semester. Students will also participate in a cultural program in Russia led by the Dalhousie Program Director, Yuri Leving.

Dalhousie Russian Programme Abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia

The 2019 summer semester in St. Petersburg will run between May 20th and July 12th, 2019. Students will stay with a Russian family. The cost of the program for the summer semester in 2019 is $4,300 (subject to change). This includes two months’ tuition and accommodation with a Russian family (incl. breakfast), visa, study materials, airport shuttle services in Russia, and liaison services in Russia. (Airfare is not included).

Some financial assistance based on need and merit may be available.

Students who complete the semester in St. Petersburg, are welcome to join the Dalhousie Russian Program in Tallinn, Estonia, which starts immediately after our summer semester in Russia.

Tallinn Program

The Dalhousie Russian programme in Tallinn, Estonia is a 3-week intensive programme of rigorous language study and cultural experience, during which students receive 60 class hours.

The cost of the program for the summer semester in 2018 is 630 EUR = $940 CAD (Note: actual price may vary depending on the conversion fee). The program fee covers the cost of courses, accommodation, and an administrative fee.

In 2018, the Tallinn program ran between July 9th and July 27th.

Ukrainian Through its Living Culture, an intensive summer course organized by the University of Alberta

Designed to enhance students’ practical language skills with a direct experience of Ukrainian life and culture, this course uses various current materials from contemporary popular culture and makes maximum use of the urban L’viv environment to expand vocabulary and comprehension. The language of instruction is Ukrainian. In order to participate, students must demonstrate a level of proficiency equivalent to two years of study at the university level. Enquiries should be addressed to the Undergraduate advisor for Ukrainian in the department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, Dr. Alla Nedashkivska.
